Happy and healthy employees are good for culture and the bottom line or so we are told….
Various research claim that healthier and happier employees positively impact such metrics as absenteeism rates, productivity, retention, injury rates and culture. (Refer to the following Comcare article as an example).
But will it work at your workplace?
At Move As 1 we take a cautious and considered approach to applying our workplace wellbeing initiatives. Why?
For two reasons:
1 - Human wellbeing is complex and it is difficult to influence and change. Any wellbeing initiative may not get a meaningful change for a person and
2 - It is not a given that positive change in a person's wellbeing will positively influence a business metric such as productivity or retention.
Because of this it is easy to waste time, energy and resources with little return on the money spent.
Our philosophy:
i)Know your WHY- Why do you want to improve the wellbeing of your workforce? Then
ii) Start small- treat everything as a testable hypothesis and do a small experiment.
Program X claims to improve health metric Y. Improvements in health metric Y may positively influence business metric Z
iii) Data driven decisions- measure measure measure- Is the program really working? If not learn and pivot. If so, well done!
